I find that few with a primitive understanding of science have any interest in shedding their superstitious beliefs in favor of reality.

You mean the greenhouse? Perhaps it helps people feel more... connected to their environment. Sometimes, an artificial environment can induce a certain... despair. Plants are aesthetically pleasing, attract the eye, and generate oxygen, which tends to have a positive effect.

Despair... Yes. This was useful in the work camps. But trees differ from flowers. They are not as colourful or bright, yet people find peace in looking at them.
